This project is my hand and wheel project. It's dipped with half black and half white. I intended to make this project so that the ideas contrast, a sort of irony- it's going to be a really nice ceramic plate ,with pretty glazing, but it's made in the style of a children's plate, which usually would be made of some sort of plastic with cartoon characters on it. This project also shows symmetry, because the plate is very symmetrical, and the glaze will draw a line down the middle in order to emphasize the symmetry. While making this project, I learned how to make a plate and I also practiced attaching pieces firmly together. This project is my theme project. They're dipped with half black and half white, with it overlapping in the middle to create a blue stripe. They go together as a theme project because they all have a dining/tea party theme, and they all have the same glaze. My original intention was to also create a saucer to go with it instead of the bowl so that I could put little tea cookies on it, but unfortunately the saucer broke, so I replaced it with this bowl that I made. My theme project will use contrast once it's glazed, because of the dark and light glazes. They are nicely proportionate to each other, as I made sure that the cup wouldn't be larger than the teapot, and that the bowl would be large enough to hold some sort of fruit or treat. I also practiced creating a handle that flows nicely from the body, which I think I did pretty well. While making this project I learned how to make a tea pot that could hold enough water, and I also practiced my skills at making hand and wheel projects.
This project is a bowl that's glazed matte turquoise with clear on the outside. This bowl's contrast in natural color and brighter colors helps to draw attention to the brighter color, which unfortunately did not turn out as well as I had hoped. However, I still feel that the form of the bowl is good, because it's nicely curved and not too straight like some of my bowls have been in the past. This project has a calm feeling that's similar to the ocean because of the contrasting colors and simple form. While making this project, I learned how to shape my bowls better and I also improved my footing a lot.
My project is a bird cage sculpture made out of paper clay. It's made with coils for the cage bars and a small clay bird inside. The project is all white, which happens once paper clay is fired. The lines in my project make it very elegant looking, as well as the clean, bright white color. The project itself is a mixture of cute, with the little tiny bird, contrasting with elegant, in my cage bars and the flower vine details. While making this project, I learned how to work properly with paper clay in order to make smaller, more detailed projects. My project is a planter that is glazed with black and white layered on top of each other. The project is straight with a shallow base for collecting water from a plant. The planter is very symmetrical and the lines of the inside cup and the surrounding dish are parallel to each other. It's a very basic planter and has a very even, neutral feel to it so that the planter won't distract from the plant I put in it or became too "busy". When making this project, I practiced opening a project twice using a sponge to compress and keep it smooth, and I also experimented with layering glazes.
